Giving Water

In this modern time of awareness conserving water has become common practice, a big leap towards appreciating our resources. That’s in America, but in other areas of the world—where resources don’t exist—conservation doesn’t need a movement, it’s a reality.

Watching the washing machine fill up with water good enough to drink makes an ironic statement about people in the world who drink water we wouldn’t think of washing our clothes in.

With all of the missions in the world, we are committed to water for people. It remains the most effective way to improve health, restore community, and save lives.

It’s not a contest in who to support. Many non-profits do good work. But you’re reading this, you know about us, and we do good work. We bring clean water and jobs to coffee growing regions, pairing your donations with the initiative of farmers in the third world who want to work towards a better quality of life. The farmers’ investment, through time and resources, is the first step to ensuring a long return on your investment.

Create Good covers its operating expenses through direct support from the board—you are invited to fund the projects: gravity-fed water systems, filters, latrines, and wells. Thank you for giving water a thought, and then some.

New plant and offices for Ecofiltro

The New Ecofiltro Plant

The New Ecofiltro Offices

The new plant and offices are scheduled to be complete in January. The new plant is going to allow Ecofiltro to produce significantly more filters to meet their ever growing demand. Plus, Create Good will have an office at Ecofiltro so that we can work together on our goal to bring clean water to those who most need it in Guatemala. Learn more about Ecofiltro at ecofiltro.org.

Drop of Water

Armira & her children

Taking care of water, counting each drop as if it was the last, is how Armira Xicay talks about the daily supply of fresh water in her household. She and her husband Otto, along with their three children, Claudia (7), Santos (5), and Dulce (1), live in a small village called El Durazno just outside of San Martin, Guatemala. El Durazno has no current water supply besides natural sources: rain, springs, rivers, and puddles.

“Water is in puddles about two kilometers from home, but it almost disappears during the dry season. The path that leads to the water is narrow and hard to walk, very muddy during the rainy season.” With three kids to bathe and feed, fetching water is no Little-House-on-the-Prairie romanticized version of pioneer life. Even reading about the day-to-day lifestyle doesn’t provide much more reality than watching “Little House on the Prairie.” Armira says simply, “There is not a single day when I can have a break; it is a daily routine if we want to have water.” Her matter-of-fact words betray her stamina and resilience in waking every day at 4 a.m. to begin one of two pre-dawn trips to bring water home before the day begins.

During the rains Armira collects as much water as possible which allows one less Laundromat trip to the nearby river. Harvested rain also provides potable water for the household, Armira points out optimistically. But the futility of winning one half-day’s work back from the battle for household water is not lost on her. “This is a woman’s activity. I have been hauling water since I was a child—my daughter now helps me, and I do not want this hard work for her. I want something better for my family.”

Six weeks ago, the Create Good Foundation, in partnership with Behrhorst Partners for Development, began construction of a gravity fed water system. This January, Armira and all residents of El Durazno will enjoy water flowing from a tap at their homes, giving them new hope.

Your purchase or donation makes a difference. Visit our store and make a purchase, send a gift, or give today. We want to help more people like Armira, will you join us?

Antigua Weather

Since I announced that I am moving to Guatemala in January, I have had several people ask about the Guatemalan weather, specifically when to visit to avoid the rain. I decided I would address the question here.

I will be living in Antigua, which sits at about 1,500 meters above sea level. There are basically two seasons in Guatemala; dry and wet. The wet season is said to be from May to September. The wet months bring about daily rains in the afternoons and evenings but the mornings are typically dry and sunny. The remainder of the year is typically dry. Temperatures in Antigua are in the 70′s year-round with the evenings dropping into the 50′s. Temperatures in the lowlands and on the coast can be very hot and humid.

Migrating South

Create Good Places a Director in the Field

The Snyder Family

Earlier this year, Create Good Foundation and Ecofiltro united as partners for clean water in Guatemala. After much thought and many conversations, we decided that rather than hiring a director in Guatemala to build our water and jobs program in partnership with Ecofiltro, I would relocate to the field. In January, my wife, our three daughters, and I will be moving to Antigua. This move will allow me to be much closer to our projects and therefore much more effective, while at the same time—thanks to technology—continue to play a role in the business development of Create Good based in Seattle.

As I said, the Create Good Foundation has solidified a partnership with Ecofiltro—we now manage their charitable efforts, including community relations, subsidizing community filters, and building a field team to train residents and collect data. Ecofiltro, in turn, directs their supporters to us for donations, allowing Ecofiltro to focus on manufacturing and urban sales while we focus on supporting rural communities in Guatemala.

Clean Water Enterprise

Eighty percent of the water in Guatemala is contaminated and must be treated. Our goal is to overcome this statistic through household water filtration. We can make clean drinking water a reality for Guatemalans and we can do it in a sustainable way. We do not give filters away, but rather charge a monthly fee for the filter. The monthly fee pays for the filter and guarantees that a family will get the replacement filter each year. Currently, on average, Guatemalan families are spending between 50–150 quetzals ($6–20) per month for firewood in order to boil drinking water. We are only charging 30 quetzals ($4) per month for the filter.

In addition, jobs are being created in the field. We are in the process of identifying individuals who can become a Clean Water Promoter, responsible for 250 to 500 households. Their job is to train the community, set up a delivery date for the filters, and follow up with the communities throughout the year with additional training. They will also be responsible for collecting the monthly fee which funds the annual replacement filter for each recipient. This is maintainable. This will provide clean water for a lifetime, not just the life of one filter. I have the pleasure of working with amazing people (BPD, Ecofiltro, Bridge Builders, and Pura Vida Create Good) in Guatemala and Seattle and I am confident that this program will be successful and sustainable.

Moving a Family Abroad

My family and I anticipate the move, looking forward to beautiful weather, understanding Guatemalan culture, and learning Spanish together. My girls are excited to make new friends, try new foods, and find out what pets are usually kept in that area of the world! We just secured housing, thanks to Chris Eaton, one of our partners in Guatemala. I will continue to update you on the work of Create Good and how your purchases and donations are truly transforming families in rural Latin America.

Thank you for your continued support.

Kindly,

Sam
